The article this post is based on talks about the trump hotel in dc and how now that trump is president the people visiting him will practically be forced to stay in his hotel. While that isnt a big ordeal as trump hotel would be as nice as all the other hotels they could stay in however i feel that all of trumps business connections will have bigger roles in the future government. Trump has stated that he will distance himself from all his businesses to focus on the presidential role. Makes me wonder if any of his actions will be influenced to benefit some of the many connections he has. What would be best is if a president had no way to benefit off of any actions they did but that is impossible.

The new Filipino president has been very against America recentley and has been driving to get American troops out of their country so its no surpirse that extremists have used that as a motive. In this post 2 Filipino militants with ISIS affiliations attempted to set off a bomb near the U.S. embassy twice but failed each time. Seems as if actions like these will definetley have an influence on the U.S. precense in the country. Seems to me that the ISIS affiliations would give the troops more reason to stay in the country. But at the same time these acts could spur other people with the same view to take action to get the troops out.

The south korean presidential scandal has turned out even more interesting than when i wrote about it a few weeks back. In my previous blog post the president seemed to be standing up against people wanting to impeach her. Now however she has stated that if the vote is made by lawmakers, she will resign. a 2/3 vote is needed by the lawmakes to pass with the impeachment which is very clever on the presidents part as they are just as likely to not pass a vote as they are to pass one. But according to this article over 40 lawmakes have indicated they would support it, which would go over the 2/3 votes needed. But there is currently a action going underway which is proposed to have the president able to serve 2 4 year terms like the United States instead of 1 five year term which South Korea currently has. If that passes the president will get a more dignified exit which is why she is trying to distract people from her scandal.

I have previously heard of minimun wage protests in the past but i had no idea it was on this big of a scale. Protesters, many wokring in the fat food industry, are demanding minimun wage to be lifted to 15 and hour which just seems ridiculous to me. The only state so far to sign on the $15 minimun wage in New York where the minimun wage was previously $9. Some other states, 2 being Arizona and Maine have lifted the minimum wage to $12 an hour which seems much more logical than $15. The previous wage in Maine was 7.50 while Arizona was $8. So a raise to $12 is still a pretty big deal. It will be very interesting if these changes come to Alabama as the wage here is 7.25 and 12 would be a big change while 15 would be monumental.

As many know the Clinton email scandal was one of the most major debate topics in the presidential race. Throughout the campaign Trump claimed that he would win the race then charge Clinton for what she did. However now that he has won, he claims to have dropped pursuing charges on Clinton which is very interesting. Now that he is in office, trump seems to be a little softer on issues as he has to appeal to everybody rather than the one party he targeted in the race. While that issue doesnt truly matter anymore, it makes me wonder if hes going to stick to his word on other issues such as a wall, which he mentioned during the race along with other things just like the email scandal.

With the election being over I thought all the drama would be over but boy am i wrong. A green party candidate has called for a recount of votes which makes no sense unless they are supporting the Clinton party. Right after losing the election clinton said she would accept the results and look to the future, but now that the green party has called for a revote, the clinton campaign is calling for one also. The green party calling for a recount raises questions on what the clinton campaign had to do with it. If a recount does happen and the results change, there will be even bigger issues than the protests going down right now. And even more claims about rigged elections will arise. Either way the people need to grow up and realize you dont always get what you want and to just accept the results.

With media being one of the most influential roles on politics its no surprise that New York Times is finally being accused. Prior to the election many news channels were sided on the election and showed it by giving much more attention to clinton's scandals while avoiding Trump while some were the other way around, focusing on Trump and avoiding Clinton. New York Times was accused of being bias against Trump which makes sense to me as New York tends to be a democratic state. Seems silly that New York Times is getting labeled with a "bias alert" while much more popular news channels are getting away with no major mention. However this is a Fox News article and Fox tends to be republican bias. That means that a democratic site could be giving another paper a "bias alert" for being republican.

Informal and Formal Powers of the Senate

The senate has the formal powers of impeachment, nominations, treaties by 2/3 votes, expulsion, censure, and contested senate elections. Those are formal due to the powers being granted in the constitution. The senate's informal powers are investigations, filibusters, and cloture. Those are informal as they are not granted or mentioned in the constitution.

Prior to reading the news article I had no idea France was approaching an election as all the media is focused on the United States. France isnt far into the race which is most likely why there isnt much about it. While i havent read much about the candidates and their views, this could come out very interesting. Many of Trumps views seems as if he wants the United States to be out of all the unions, following what Britain did with Brexit. So depending on who becomes leader in France, they could join too. The ex president has already backed out of the race so there will definitely be somebody new. I picture that starting a wave of EU succession which could make things very interesting for the good or bad.

In recent news Russia and the U.S.A. are still arguing over Syria, nothing new. Nearly all other news stories are about Trump and i figure it will be that way for a while. Back to Syria, Obama and the United Nations are teaming up againsts Russia for doing something they dont like. I would much rather side with Russia as they are one of the bigger threats as the United Nations wont doing anything due to the most powerful countries being teamed up. In my opinion the powerful nations should just leave the middle east alone, all they are doing is causing more problems between eachother and making people mad.

While there is already a lot of drama involving the election, theres even more. The protests have been going on for a while now even though theres nothing they can do about the election results. Now colleges are giving students "stress relief" activities to help deal with the election. The problem with that is that many people's money are being invested into the colleges wether it be tuition from government, parents, or school itself. Either way its a waste of money. This seems to be stemming from the politicaly correct culture which is prevalent nowadays. While that can prevent rudeness, it also takes away the harsh realities of the real world which in the end cant be avoided.

As many know following the 2016 election, one of the most influential classes during the election was the white working class. It seems as if in the past years the government has done very little regarding that class which gave Trump the upper hand as he specifically target the rather large group. Clinton seemed to go for races other than white more than she did white people themselves along with targetting the working/lower class voters. While Trump did win many votes from the lower/working class voters, had Clinton gone for more white working class voters, she would have had a much better chance at winning some of the many swing states.

Following Trumps victory in the election i thought it was anything but a close race as trump got 290 electoral college votes. However population wise Clinton got more votes than Trump which raises questions. Only 4 other candidates have gotten more population votes yet lost the election. There must be reasons why the electoral college works that way but it makes me question the government as less power seems to be going to the people. Some states split those electoral college votes while others dont which i dont understand why.

Following Trump's victory it is definetley going to be interesting to see if the United States follows Trump's theme about getting our jobs back and taking a Brexit style path. Following Brexit, Britain when down on the trade line for many places including the U.S. but now that Trump has won they might go up as he is opposed to the European Union trade committees. However with Trump having a good side to Russia that might change as Britain and Russia arent the best of friends and trades with one side could hurt ties to the other.

While the trump victory has many predicted ups and downs, one of the best ups seems to be Trump and Russia. As many know the Syria conflict has caused even more heat between Russia and the United States and Trump and Putin seem to have a good relation as they each say good things about eachothers. So hopefully with these two in office, they will come to terms about Syria and other issues to help get rid of the tension and form greater relations with Russia.

California District 25

comimg from the 2016 elections, the republican Steve knight won district 25. Personally I thought the democrat running against him carforio would win due to the democratic population. Knight most likely won due to people who know little about politics voting for him since he is listed as holding the position on the ballots. Most people don't keep up with the house races which could explain why.

While the police shooting protests  seem to have died down for a bit, the Dakota pipeline is the new trend. While reasons of protest are completely different than the ones in the past, they still seem to be following the same guidelines: something happens, issue rises, people protests, gain attention, protests escalate. I havent looked much into how it all began but in summary the pipeline was being built in Native American's sacred lands and now they are protesting, trying to stop the building of the line and have it done elsewhere. Had the government been building the pipeline through the reservation without permission, issues definitely would be expected. However this pipelines building location is outside of the reservation and on government/company owned land. Which gives the builders the complete right to do it. This issue seems a lot like the epi pen issue that recently came up. The oil company is like the owner of the epi pens and they have the complete right to build there/raise pen prices, but they are pressured not to do so under moral standards.

While gun control is a large issue in the presedential race, people only think about losing their guns and not the other effects that come with that. For any investor a smart move would be to invest in gun companies if Clinton ends up winning. Obama's actions on gun sales such as background checks, have already shown a huge spike in gun sales. So if Clinton ends up doing what she claims such as more background checks, gun sales will greatly increase prior to her actions, giving anybody who invests in gun companies a good amount of money.

As anybody who goes on the internet, news, or tv have heard, the FBI director has reopened the investigation on Clinton's email servers. As expected, he has received criticism for doing so so late in the presedential race which I agree is a silly thing to do, especially since he could have just continued with the same investigation on Clinton which was going on earlier in the year, and which he concluded was not worthy of a charge. Now if Clinton is elected, the FBI is going to have to let Clinton go, drop the charges if they come with any, or arrest Clinton while she is president, something that would definitely turn out interesting. While it seems rude to Clinton to re open the investigation right now, I personally think they should treat it as any normal investigation and treat Clinton as a normal person, not letting her rank get her out of any situations to come.

Recentley many events have been going down outside of the United States but we are too busy with our own problems to pay attention to any of those. One of the biggest events is the scandal of the South Korean president. The issue has stemmed from apparent evidence that the leade, Park, was practically being used a a puppet figure by others. While this is a big issue, I believe it also shows how corrupt the American government is and how we are doing nothing about it. There are thousands of protesters there currently, demanding a change. However here, in the United States, something worse can happen and people act like it never did. Everybody complains and wants a change, but never take the opportunity to make it.

The recent massive payment to Iran stirred up a large amount of controversy and people critcizing Obama, and now it seems like what they said is right. Following the 400 million payed to Iran, which happened to go down on the day 4 American prisoners were released, more Iranian-Americans have been imprisoned in Iran. I think that the payment wasn't a smart move because as we can see, Iran is now using that as a opporunity to take more prisoners to get more money. Along with that, Iran is said to be supporting terrorist groups that the United States is going against, so the United States is practically funding their own enemies.

Recently the leader of the phillipines has taken various steps for cutting ties with the United States. That has been in ways such as taking all united states troops from the phillipines, something that has been going on for a long time. It seems like one reason he is doing so is due to the United States having a colonial precense there for a long time. Which i somewhat understand as taking the troops away would give the phillipines more of a sense of freedom. However while going away from the U.S., they are now turning to China, making agreements with them which could cause more tension between the U.S., phillipines, and china.

Following up on reading this news post I discovered that the OSCE(Organization for Security and Cooperation) foreign corporation sends observers over to look at people at places such as polling sites and rallies. Some states allow it while others don't which makes it seem even weirder. Seems like that could easily be worked around as somebody could pose as a tourist showing up at the rallies. There will be a total off 500 observers which seems like a whopping number, especially compared to the 44 people sent over in the 2012 election. There isn't any info on whether the observers come from one specific country or if they are an international group. It seems like that could definitely stir up heat regarding how people think Russia is interfering with the elections. Russia is aware of that and wanting to avoid accusations by only having 1 person observing the elections, and that one person being a staff member of the company managing the observers. Only 8 states allow observers which makes me think that the 500 spectators are even more unnecessary. Either way, in my opinion there's no reason to send spectators when they could just watch the news.

Missouri Race

The current race for Missouri definitely seems more intense and interesting than other races. Upon doing some research I found that Missouri has tended to be a Republican state in the past, giving the Republicans an advantage in the senate. However now the democratic candidate Jason Kander is giving the current republican senator roy blunt a run for his money. Many assume all democrats are liberals, just like republicans are seen as conservative, so Blunt had been attempting to label Kander as a liberal in a mainly conservative state. However Kander shot back real quick with his video assembling a ar-15 while blindfolded. While Trump will win Missouri no doubt, Kander winning the seat in the senate could give democrats the position to control the senate. While Missouri is only 10 points in the presidential election, neither presidential candidate has made any competition. The biggest donations for each side have originated out of state, showing how much a advantage in the senate means. What makes it really interesting is how Trump's campaign seems to be helping Kander. Trump has been criticizing many people in the government as being "insiders" and Kander has used that to label Blunt as one of those insiders. So he has made it seem that Trump's entire message is to get rid of Blunt, making the republican Trump supporters of Missouri vote for a democratic senator.

This news post talks about Clinton being "two-faced" for different groups of people in order to gain their vote. "two faced" might be too broad of a term to use for that but i do agree that politicians can change a little but to conform to different groups of people, as long as their ideas still work with ideas they have told other groups. Clinton compared herself to Lincoln, saying he did the same thing. While i do believe that is true, it seems like she is using Lincoln as an excuse to do it. Trump is taking that as an opportunity to put Clinton under fire as Lincoln was known as "honest abe" and Clinton supposedly lied about the email scandal.

While the list of events going down in the middle east is endless, this one seems to be more important than the others. A U.S. ship in the water near Yemen was fired at with missiles by Houthi militants and although each didn't reach their target, it has sparked the United States to consider taking counter measures. The militants are Iranian backed which makes the recent ordeals even more confusing as the United States payed Iran a huge sum of money recently. If the United States attacks back it will most likely agitate Iran which is a bigger problem than a group like ISIS.

The Trump Hotels were recently breached, losing information on customers credit card numbers and other personal info. After all the breaches going on nowadays this fits right in, except for the fact that it connects to Trump. It turns out that the most recent shooting of a black man that took place in Charlotte cant be blamed on race. The officer that shot Keith Scott was African American himself, something that the press has said very little about. Many dont know this it seems and keep on pulling the race card during protests and debates. I followed up on Brentley Vinson and when googling him this image showed up.
Brenson is the tallest one standing in the middle, confirmed by multiple official sources. Upon googling the image, along with photos of the actual Brenson, there are many that are zoomed in on the white officer on the left. Due to that showing up, many would see that and assume it is another black man-white officer shooting, and therefore use the race argument. Either way not enough evidence has been released to the public to prove wether or not Keith Scott had a gun like the officer claims, or a book like the family says.

According to the city, the man shot by the police officer, was holding a gun and refusing to obey the police officers orders. But according to the family of the man he was holding a book. With all the events going down nowadays i wonder if this will pass like all the others. The boston bombing seemed to have a longer lifespan than all the shootings, maybe because it was a bombing instead of shooting. That could cause this event to stay popular for a while, especially since it seems to be affiliated with a terror organization. From reading this post it seems as if there is still much more to be discovered as the government is still investigating, raiding, and attempting to track down supposed affiliates of the bombing. While the suspect seems to not have physical connections to terror groups, he most likely has some connection in ways such as the internet.

Some of the members might have a logic that people will need much more abortions due to the zika virus infecting many. For some odd reason the senate democrats joined the republicans to pass a appropriations bill which included 1.1 billion to fight zika. However the democrats turned around and blocked multiple attempts to fund zika, which according to this post, they did so in order to blame republicans before the november election. Im not sure whether thus is true or not, as many say FOX is a republican sided news network, but if it is true, that is a very dirty way of winning votes without thinking about the people.

This Epipen issue has just came into debate recently due to the owning company Mylan N.N. increasing the price for a two pack of Epipens from 100, to 600. Many have prompted the government to take action against this but the problem is that it is completely legal for the company to do that, its just part of the capitalist society that we live in. Government groups such as congress are putting heat on Mylan for doing this, but i believe that they can pressure the company but shouldnt be able to force them to change anything. Forcing them to change would take away the freedom of the capitalist society we live in, and could prompt many changes like that in the future. The company should eventually realize how they are losing sales in the United States, due to people driving to other countries such as Canada where the prices are lower. Either way the company should be able to do what they want, as we do live in a free society.

News Post Cycle 2

This post talks about how a total of 26 walgreens stores will now be selling birth control pills. It was made a big deal because the company running those walgreens stores is a nonprofit catholic organization. I think this was the right thing because religion shouldnt change what the government and major corporations do, as the United States is a very diverse country. Choices should be made based on the people and country, not ones religious values. And while some disagree with things like abortion, and while there are other options, people should be able to access things wether others like it or not.

News Post Cycle 1

Last year i wrote a paper on the issues on gun control, and after that plus watching this video, i lost even more hope in the media. The videos clearly show protesters harassing trump supporters in ways such as spitting and throwing trash. Yet the same people are the ones protesting against trump and say he is the bad one. This connects to how the protesters in Milwaukee burned down their own town after a armed black person was shot by a black cop. They seem to have lost their logic and are using it as an excuse for violence. I think the people of the country are finally realizing that and starting to turn against the groups and their actions.

News Post Cycle 1

This post talked about Obamas handling of the Louisiana floods. Upon watching the video it turns out Obama was on vacation in Marthas Vineyard despite the flooding and other events such as the Milwaukee riots. It isnt that bad as he did undertake some action such as sending others to the scene and declaring a state of emergency, the video showed a clip of Obama criticizing George Bush over his reaction to Katrina, yet now he is almost doing the same thing which is ironic. However he will be going down on Tuesday which isn't as bad as some have made it seem.

This warning to stockpile in a place like Germany just seems like another normal thing nowadays with all the terrorist attacks. It makes me question why they keep on letting refugees in. On one hand i completely understand as it provides a home for people trying to escape death and war. On the other hand its a free entry pass for terrorist trying to get into Germany. With the way its been turning out for European countries, I have to say it would be best to keep the refugees out. Because even with background checks like the government claims, they will still get in.

News Post Cycle 1

After reading this it is clearly evident that Hillary Clinton exposed classified documents. Im sure that had happened before due to mistakes, but this wasn't a mistake. In various interviews where Clinton was questioned about the documents, Clinton said she used only one device and followed all classified document protocol. However the FBI investigation clearly countered all of Clinton's statements, saying she used multiple devices and did so with "extreme carelessness". While this is a mistake that I can see anybody making, Clinton denied the claims in various interviews which were under sworn testimony. The article also says many other government individuals would suffer consequences from the action, yet Clinton gets away free while also still running for president

Political News Post Cycle 1

After reading this it sounds like Russia is edging more and more towards war in Ukraine. From what is going on with the two sides fighting, one being Russian backed. It sounds like Russia is practically already in the war. The two sides keep on saying different things, but overall it sounds like Russia is moving forces towards the Ukraine border. Wether that be to try and scare people and make the surrender, or planning to invade, the forces seem to only be escalating the tension more. Wether that be a good or bad thing, is left for the future to decide.

Beginning of AP Gov

So far in AP gov we have done various things. One of those is taking the Political typology quiz and also the modern political news quiz. Those helped us realize how the young generation we are part of has distanced from politics while the older adults have grown closer, greatly changing the results of votes. The article on Most/Religious states shows that the south eastern states are the most religious, while the Northern and Eastern states tend to be the least religious. The interviewers found the data for that by interviewing people which could be inaccurate due to people not telling the truth. The people might be lying due to their location. For example in Vermont you would be shamed less to be unreligious as compared to in Alabama where one might be dissed for being nonreligious. Political scientist could be interested in this because the data could show the areas where more elderly live due to the elderly staying religious while more and more young people stray from religion. The religious data could show how the conservative side of politics is going to be losing ground as the appeal more to the religious side, which is shrinking. While the liberal side will be growing due to the nonreligious percent growing which supports the liberals.

13 Days

Throughout this year of U.S. History, the class has made me think much more about what we learn about. We have been given situations of our modern time such as global warming, which are very difficult situations, making hard decisions, something that many in the past have had to make. Those past decisions being things such as the cuban missile crisis as portrayed by the movie 13 Days in which the governments of the U.S. and Russia were put in a situation unlike any that had ever occurred at that time. Having nothing to refer to makes everything way more difficult as you have no idea what expectations to have or standards to set. Knowing about what the people were put in helps me understand why they did what they did, and why the issues that are seen today as resolvable were so difficult to solve at the time.

Climate Letter to the future: History

Dear Future Student,
As of now, 2016, Earth is us humans only inhabitable planet and while that may change by your time, right now its the only place we can live which is why we need to protect it. While climate change has been affecting our planet for a long time, it isn't until recently that we have noticed that humans have a major role in the process. Despite being a major issue, having played a role in various events, climate change is still affecting the earth greatly, while not receiving the attention it deserves.
The first mention of human's having an effect on climate change(3) was written in 1957, it was an article saying that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere had increased due to people and the industrial revolution. While 1957 seems like a long time ago, it truly wasn't compared to climate change existing much longer than humans have. The article written by Hans Suess and Roger Revelle received some attention and some saying it wasn't true, until scientist Charles David Kelly backed it up with atmospheric carbon dioxide measurements. While the theory was proved true, it got little attention and no major following action taken. 7 years later in 1964 the National Academy of science conducted a study to see if it was possible to change the weather for things such as farming or military, only to come to the conclusion that it was possible to change the climate without meaning to, called "inadvertent modifications of weather and climate" and carbon dioxide was the main factor. In 1979 the National academy of science released another statement saying that "climate changes will result from man's combustion of fossil fuels and changes in land use." The topic still had little attention, that was due to the environmentalist movement of the time focusing on other issues such as water pollution, air quality, and wildlife. Rachel Carson's Novel Silent Spring, which warned about synthetic pesticides was one the main contributors to the movement. The Marshall institute(3) was a conservative free marked research company working mainly for the government, with the end of the cold war in 1989 the company had less to do, prompting them to challenge research connecting humans to global warming, the same strategy used by some tobacco companies which challenged doctors. That action formed 2 sides, some saying humans caused climate change, the other saying it was all natural, making climate change a debate, rather than a issue.
Prior to this project i had thought little about the roles climate has played in history, but after thinking about it and a little research, i found many times when something as little as a foggy day affected something major such as the destination of an atomic bomb. Many at this time are aware of the WW2 bombing of Nagasaki, one of the only 2 times an atomic bomb has ever been used on humans, however many don't know that Nagasaki wasnt the main target. Nagasaki was the back up target for the primary Kokura, which was protected by something as simple as fog. Another example of climate playing a role in history was in the winter when hitler attempted to invade Russia. Prior to the attack the Germans were so confident in winning that they packed no winter clothing, some being so confident that they brought along dress uniforms to wear when victory marching. Yet when the Germans attacked, Russia was able to hold them off until the winter, one of the record lows, hit. Germany was very unprepared and suffered greatly from the cold with oil in vehicles freezing, artillery grease freezing, and even soup freezing in minutes. With so many germans dying from the cold, Russia was back on the offensive, making that winter a turning point in the war. Even with examples like that on how climate effects history, people are still doing very little to help despite climate caused events happening right in front of our eyes.
In 2016 much more people are aware about climate change yet still aren't trying to stop it. Scientists have tried every way throughout the years to get attention on what climate change is causing such as the ocean rising. Due to a weakened ozone layer, caused by human pollution, more heat from the sun is getting though, melting the ice caps(4), causing sea level to rise, threatening wildlife and human civilizations on the coast. Hurricanes are also a effect of the climate change due to hurricanes drawing heat from the ocean, more heat means stronger hurricanes(2) which bring a long list of negatives. The different weather is also causing migrations that weren't suppose to happen, disrupting ecosystems along with causing extinction and bringing along disease(5). Aside from causing natural issues,  climate is also behind a current political issue, the war and human migrations in middle eastern places like Syria. Prior to the current war breaking out Syria, which might be called something else at your time, Syria faced a drought(1), making many people who had been farming move into cities, and like America has experienced in the 1920s, a rush of people into urban places causes poverty and crime, but unlike America, the Syrian government couldn't handle the issue, leading to the problems going on today.
Throughout the years scientists have started to realize that connecting climate change to public health  makes the biggest impact. One notable example of a issue that used public health to cause change was the smog in 1948 Donora(3), PN. The smog lasted for 5 days and killed 20 people, creating the awareness of pollution and the Clear Air Act, which reduced 6 major pollutants by 72%. However in order to use the public health view, something needs to happen, leaving scientist waiting for an event to prompt action(6), which will hopefully have came by the time you read this.
         Good luck, Evan Lake

Climate

Throughout this process i have realized how much different the world would be had not something simple like a cloudy day happened. Prior to this research process i had known about the moment when the atomic bomb was dropped on its secondary target Hiroshima, rather than its primary target of Kokura, due to clouds obscuring the vision, however i have never realized until now how much a simple factor like a gust of wind could have changed the entire bombing situation, and many other historical moments rather they have a major impact or subtle.
Climate effects the way people live greatly, besides determining things such as to live in a tent of igloo, it also determines food, culture, farming, jobs, and much much more. One modern example is the crisis of migrants in Syria. While many would expect that the migrants are leaving due to the war torn area, that war had motives behind it. One of those being the drought Syria experienced from 2006 to 2011. That drought caused people to move in from rural farming areas to urban areas, and we know how much of an effect that can have after studying the 1920s and its urbanization. I see how this could pass of many peoples heads when they are looking for reasons behind something, but in the end wether it be the atomic bombing or deciding wether or not to go for a run climate has been a factor in everything.

Research Category

The history, anthropology, and sociology interests me the most because i have never thought about how truly climate has played a role in history. Now that i think about it a few examples come to mind, but i know there are much larger scenarios in which the climate had a large role in events that have changed the way we live today and in the future.

Climate

Hot- One of the basic factors in determining the climate of a area
Cold-One of the basic factors in determining the climate of a area
Global Warming-This came to mind because it is a big area of debate today and is used frequently.
Change- I thought of this because the climate is always changing and that is talked about a lot.
Human- Us humans can affect the climate in various ways.

Are the humans affecting the climate or is it just natural?Or a combination of both?

1930s reading

Read about the Great Depression (Links to an external site.).  According to this article, what was wrong with President Hoover's response?  Why did people blame themselves when things went wrong, and how valid or invalid was this response?
According to this article Hoover underestimated the seriousness of the crisis and people didnt think it was the governments job to help the citizens in that situation. People blamed themselves when things went wrong due to men being expected to hold up the family, and it was humiliating to have to ask for assistance. It was invalid because while people some people did go out of control to cause it, not all did.
Read about Black Sunday (Links to an external site.). How would you have felt if you'd been there on that day? What kinds of fears, concerns, or questions would be going through your mind during, and after, the event described?
Had i been there i would be very afraid of the storm. I would have feared people being suffocated or buried to death by the dust and if i would be making it out alive. After i would wonder who lived and didnt.
Read about The Drought (Links to an external site.).  What areas were affected by it?  What caused it.  The author ends this article with a pithy quote.  Do you agree or disagree with this historian's perspective? Why or why not?
The western part of kansas, northern two thirds of texas panhandle, southeastern colorado, the Oklahoma pan handle, and northeastern new mexico were affected by the drought. It was caused by a combination of drought and misuse. I agree with the quote because America wasnt thinking about the side effects of what they were doing, causing the issues.
Read about Mass Exodus from the Plains (Links to an external site.).  Were does the migration of people out of the Dust Bowl rank in terms of other migrations in US History?  What made life hard for people once they arrived in California?
The dust bowl exodus is ranked as the largest migration in U.S. history. Life was hard in california because many farms there were corporate owned and the farming techniques and products were different than what the people from the dust bowl knew. They had to eventually give up farming and move into shacks in the city.

Radio Research

First licensed radio was the KDKA in 1920 in Pittsburg which broadcasted a 18 hours marathon about the election results between presidential candidates Harding and Cox. Harding ended up becoming the first president to broadcast over radio with a international address heard by people in europe, japan, south and central america. in 1922 political conventions were broadcasted over the radio during the nomination season. By 1924 the number of licensed stations was 500, from the previous 5 in 1921. By 1930 more than 40 percent of American households owned a radio, by 1940 it doubled. Some saw radio as a good thing, as a national town meeting, while others saw it as a threat, saying it would go under control of things such as fascism, communism, and corrupt capitalism. While the radio became popular during the great depression, many worked to get one due to it being a form of endless entertainment. In the 1930s the average listeners spent more than 4 hours a day listening to the radio. Some of the first politicians to adopt radio were Huey Long and Floyd B Olson. The radios eventually became the newspapers source for stories due to its quick delivery.

1920s education

The 1920s was a great time of change for the United States. There were many advances in the time in areas such as religion, recreation and more, but today i will be focusing on the category of education. One of the most notable successes of the 20s was America’s economic prosperity, with more jobs, more money, and the new middle class. The middle class was made up of Americans working mainly white collar jobs, that was due to the rise in education at the time. Over the decade of the 1920s the number of high school students doubled from 2.2 million to more than 5 million, along with the college and universities attendance which tripled from 600000 in 1918 to 1.2 million in 1930. Due to the large change at the time, education provided the modern economy the skills it demanded in fields such as management, engineering, and economics. The rise in middle income jobs provided the government with more tax money, which in turn helped improve the already growing education system.  Due to students of the same age being grouped together at schools and colleges, a new social group was formed, distinct to the period of adolescence. The new period not only provided students with a time and place to prepare for the workplace but also as a area to develop themselves in ways such as social groups, hobbies, and interests. A large increase in activities such as fraternities, sororities, and organized sports helped shape the view of college that many of us have today. The 20s was the time of some of the most famous authors in existence such as F. Scott Fitzgerald. And while many of the authors might not have been young enough to receive an education from the new system, it provided them with a much larger customer base due to more people being able to read. With the popularity of learning growing, scientist were given a greater opportunity to share their learnings, one in particular being the english naturalist, Charles Darwin. With more people understanding science, Darwin’s theories of evolution gained support, causing issues with those defending traditional faith, also known as fundamentalist. The fundamentalist followed the bible literally, meaning science clearly went against their beliefs such as Adam and Eve. The issue caused numerous debates such as the famous Scopes trial, which helped put an end to the fundamentalists theories, but in the end was also connected to learning. Without the new education system of the 1920s, the decade would not have been the time of prosperity and change it is seen as today, in turn changing the economically prosperous country we know today.

Book Review

"Professional Women and the flapper: image and reality" by Kaisey Showers easily captures the change taking place in the 1920s with a story of a young woman adapting to the new norms of the time. It greatly describes the beginning of a new time in America, particularly for young middle to working class women.

"Love in the Renaissance" by Alexa Nunn Portrays the jazz age of the 1920s with a romantic story about a african american singer, one of the many facing the racial struggle at the time. While displaying the history of the harlem renaissance, it also shows the true origin of jazz music.

Book

My book tells the story of the rise and fall of the KKK.

WW1 and the U.S. Isolaionism

The United States seemed to want to keep its involvement in ww1 to a bare minimum, but the actions that were coming didn't want that. Upon the outbreak of the war the united states immediately took action by attempting to get all Americans out of Europe. After the German invasion of France, Wilson made sure to not get involved by proclaiming the United States as neutral, and urging citizens to not take actions in favor of a European nation. However as the war went on the United States kept on trading with European nations such as England, while not trading with Germany due to their supply chain being blocked by the British navy. If the United States was truly neutral they would have stopped trade with other nations to, but the profits were too good to give up. The United States received 400 million from countries for war supplies, 200 million coming from France and Britain going to the steel industries for war supplies. With Germany using submarines to sink ships frequently the United States warned people not to go on the British liner the Lusitania and anybody going on it was doing it at their own risk. After the sinking of the Lusitania and other ships, the United States announced that it planned to arm all merchant ships, hoping to prevent them from being sunk, but also taking a step closer to war. After Wilson declared that, germany announced that all armed ships will be sunk without warning. With the United States and german tension rising even more the one action that finally sparked war was the interception of the German message to Japan and Mexico. The message was a proposal by Germany to get Mexico and Japan to attack the United States if they dont remain neutral. The plan promised Mexico financial support and land such as Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico. Following all the actions, President Wilson won support by almost all of the senate to declare war on Germany, ending Americans kind of  neutral position.

WW1 Poster

1. I would define propaganda as an advertisement to get people to support/get involved in something. Seems to be used mainly in times of war

2. propaganda-information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help or harm a person, group, movement, institution, nation, etc.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/propaganda

4. Upon looking at all the images, one realizes immediately that all of the posters have a woman as the main character. 2 of the backgrounds all depict times of war with things such as soldiers, while the other seems to be a showing a nursing school that the poster is advertising. The images seem to be reaching out to you, trying to get you to come.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-7jsJa5YaWrNE04aUtTVHV4bk0/view

5. I believe the artist wanted women to see the posters and become motivated in themselves, thinking they can escape the typical household like jobs of women, while helping the country in times of war.

6. The ideal target is women without jobs. The careers the posters are showing don't require tons of education, which is convenient because many women at that time had very little education.

7. Im am comfortable with the idea because it helps you form your own opinion on the situation. Also helps you become aware of what is going on, which could also provide opportunities for you and others.

8. At the time some might not have known much about the war going on and the government felt the need to bring awareness to the people. The government also needed people and money, and with the posters advertising jobs opportunities people became aware of the openings and also of things such as war bonds. At that time women didnt work as much so the government knew they were potential employees and invested in the posters in order to get the workers they needed.
