phrenology

provenance is the place of origin or earliest known history of something.

today we studied a statue of a head to find out that it is a replica of a statue of phrenology by l.n fowler. fowler was a person in the 18th century who believed strongly in phrenology which was the concept of the brain having specific areas for various tasks. Phrenologist believed they could measure certain characteristics of a person based on bumps on the head. The statue we studied was a sculpture of a head with a map of what fowler believed each part of the brain did. The statues became popular in the 18th century and was used as a symbol of discipline. Phrenology later evolved into the still popular phycology in the 19th century. Phrenologist believed that a personality could be change by ways such as a knife going through the selfish part of a brain, which would then make that person generous. While not all of phrenology was true, in the 1900s it was proven that parts of the brain have specific functions, backing a major phrenology theory.
