The Future

1. Predictions of the future-
- by the year 2000 the Average age of 100 years
-cure for almost all diseases
-regularly scheduled trips to various planets
-Man made moons circling earth
-solar power will become the main source
-no danger of overpopulation
-increased food supply
-no mosquitos or flies
-tanks
-television

2. These all seem to be a wishlist due to all of the inventions being helpful and peaceful. With one of possible exception being the tank, it  still could be used in good ways.

3. Predictions such as tanks, increased food supply, and man made moons which are today space stations are all true. However ones such as a roofed city and sea railways are not true and impractical.

4. The predictions all seem to have the trend of making life easier in ways such as less walking or cooking. They all tend to perceive a peaceful and stressless world with very little problems.

5. My predictions-
all non combustion engines.
purifying salt water efficiently
computers in brains
google glass but in contacts
faster ways of transportation
strength increasing suits
Ban on tobacco
legalize marijuana
Better prison system
invisibility cloak

6. How much control over the future do we have?
As an individual one has practically no control over the future unless they were to make a outstanding achievement however, in groups one  can have a influence and with enough people they might influence the government, which has the most control overall. The government has the strongest control out of all.

How do you analyze a political cartoon?

I already knew that in political cartoons the artists tend to exaggerate features on a character, which could make the person easier to distinguish and recognize, while at the same time making fun of them. I also knew the cartoons tend to have some kind of irony in them as the main theme and also use tiny things to represent a much larger issue or idea going on. What i learned is that the cartoons normally have some kind of analogy which compares 2 unlike things. Now going forward i will try to use all of those methods on figuring out what a political cartoon represents. My guide will be the one posted on the library of congress.
This image is made to represent spain sinking the Maine after signing a treaty with the U.S. the knife represents Spain stabbing america in the back, while in reality there was no evidence that Spain sunk the Maine.
This image is suppose to represent president mckinley holding back america from the war on cuba. Meaning the illustrator wants america to be involved greatly and is pressuring mckinley to get involved before cuba is "dead" as represented by the vulture.

This image is made to show that cuba is dying with symbols such as the dead child and vulture in the background. The image seems to be pressuring the United States to get involved in the cuban conflict before its too late.

This image is made to show how america is letting all the capitalist into the phillipines with their open door policy. The picture seems to illustrate the people entering as wealthy and greedy, maybe stating that the illustrator is opposed to others entering the phillipines.

This image is made to represent how the illustrator thinks that cuba, hawaii, and the phillipines are going to become a state. The pictures seem to make the people seem like the stereotypes of those places by depicting them as less civilized than americans. maybe trying to say that they need to be taken over.

Eddie Aikau

1. The title was given to this movie because eddie aikau was the main focus, and had a huge influence of the hawaiian surfing culture. Making him a "legend" in that area.

2. The films argument was about how eddie saw things such as family, hawaiian culture, friendship, and surfing as important, and how he promoted them.

3. Being made by espn, this film had to include some type of sport, this one being surfing. In order to satisfy their customer type, espn had to make the main focus be a sport in order to fall under their channels genre.

4. Having been made by a different channel, this film could have had narrowed in more on hawaiian history had it been made by the history channel. Or something such as culture had it been made by pbs, instead of being about sports like espn did.

6. Other documentaries could be made on how the people managed to travel by boat across the ocean by only using the stars. Others could also be made on eddie aikau's brothers who were also successful in surfing.

phrenology

provenance is the place of origin or earliest known history of something.

today we studied a statue of a head to find out that it is a replica of a statue of phrenology by l.n fowler. fowler was a person in the 18th century who believed strongly in phrenology which was the concept of the brain having specific areas for various tasks. Phrenologist believed they could measure certain characteristics of a person based on bumps on the head. The statue we studied was a sculpture of a head with a map of what fowler believed each part of the brain did. The statues became popular in the 18th century and was used as a symbol of discipline. Phrenology later evolved into the still popular phycology in the 19th century. Phrenologist believed that a personality could be change by ways such as a knife going through the selfish part of a brain, which would then make that person generous. While not all of phrenology was true, in the 1900s it was proven that parts of the brain have specific functions, backing a major phrenology theory.
